Enrich your creativity by going solo

Do you honor and celebrate your accomplishments? I hope so. If not, I’m here to offer ideas and encouragement to do so!

Our culture is apt to hand out trophies for sports, certificates for academic achievements, and cash bonuses for stellar employees, but such awards are often neglected in the creativity world. However, last month, I had the honor of attending an award ceremony for local writers and poets. Writing the Rockies contest was open to adults, high school students, and middle school students. Five of my clients won. In addition to breakfast, they received certificates and a check for their accomplishments. I was proud of my students and shared in their excitement.

But it gave me pause.

Without a contest, how do we, as creatives, acknowledge our hard work? In a climate that judges successes based on monetary value, it can be challenging for an artist to feel acknowledged, let alone successful in a capitalistic world. However, it is essential to celebrate our successes and milestones.

How?

Below are five simple ways to celebrate:

1. Take yourself on a playdate to a park, a movie, play, museum or sporting event- whatever fits your fancy

2. Take a nap and lounge in a job well done

3. Go out for a celebratory meal. If you can’t swing a dinner, treat yourself to a biscotti and a cinnamon latte. Indulge in the flavors.

4. Enjoy a long walk and notice the wild, not what’s buzzing in your head

5. Call a friend or family member and share your progress- share in the celebration!

The small moments in life are what matter, not the certificate. That said, it’s important to pat your own back. Celebrate the milestones; big and small!
