Summer Play!
Ten Creative Ideas for Lazy Summer Days
It’s summer! Wahoooooooooooooooooo!
And with summer comes newfound freedoms, lazier days, vacation weekends, and light-hearted vibes full of play. At least, that’s the dream. It’s not everyone’s experience, and on many days, it’s not mine, either (like today, when it’s 50 and rainy).
But we can hope. We can plan for it. We can dream of summer play and manifest it into action.
Artistic play can be a joyful, therapeutic experience. The goal is to tap into your curiosity, not perfection. What better time than summer to let go of rigid thinking and practice imaginative play? Summer’s never been well-known for productivity, so let go of results, and instead, step into a playful flow, unleashing your creative juices.

Below are 10 playful ways to engage with creativity.
Create art with found objects using items from your kitchen, junk drawer, or nature. If you paint, use sponges, feathers, credit cards, forks, or string to paint instead of brushes.
Find a space outside and journal to the sounds of birdsongs.
20-Minute Creation Challenge: Set a timer and create a complete piece (example: a drawing, poem, or collage). No editing allowed. Remember- it’s the process, not the result.
Live-Doodle to Music: Make an eclectic playlist and let your pen follow the rhythm.
Public Chalk Art or Yarn Bombing: Leave playful marks in public spaces (where allowed).
Art Relay: Start a drawing or painting, pass it to someone else to add to, and continue until it feels “complete.”
Storytelling Relay: same as above but sit around a campfire and create a collective story.
"What If?" Game: Write wild "what if" questions on slips of paper and ask a group of family or friends to pick out of hat and come up with creative answers. Example: What if dogs ruled the world?
Build a Blanket Fort: on a rainy Saturday, bring a flashlight, your journal, and lots of colored pens to play.
Dance Freeze: Play music, dance, then freeze in the most creative pose when the music stops.
Come on- it’s summer! Be a kid again.

Our relationship with Creativity experiences A LOT of interference just in the course of living our lives. We get so many mixed signals about creativity — when to use it, for what purpose, and to what end. The general, overall effect, for most people, is a somewhat fraught relationship with Creativity, even while the desire and passion to create is still very much alive. This often leads to angst or paralysis when we do sit down to create.
Because we carry these wounds, internalized messages, and expectations that aren’t even aligned with who we are, we often pass judgment on our work, give up before we’ve really begun, hide our creations from the world, or dream of doing it someday.
In this workshop, I’ll guide us through a map of what I see as the key ingredients for creative health and wellness. Using specific examples, you’ll get to see which areas of your creative landscape could use a little love, attention, acknowledgment, and repair, so you can create more boldly, with more joy, excitement, and impact.
Creativity is our birthright. Let’s reclaim it in its fullness!
