Playdates and Adventures!

Enrich your creativity by going solo

When’s the last time you had an adventure by yourself? And by yourself, I do mean, by yourself. Calling a friend can make a playdate more exciting, less embarrassing, or better fun than setting out on your own. However, there’s value in seeking solitude while exploring or experiencing something new.

Years ago, I came across the concept of an artist date while reading Julia Cameron’s book, The Artist's Way. The idea is to set a specific time to nurture your inner artist or creativity. Doing so, you reconnect with your sense of play, wonder, and inspiration. I’ve come to do it on a regular basis, and the time I gift myself never disappoints.

Not long ago, I decided to take myself to the movies, a rare event in the era of golden television and comfortable couches. There’s a small artsy movie theater in Denver that runs eclectic films. Going alone meant I could choose without debate or discussion. I tossed on a ball cap, ordered popcorn, pumped on three rounds of butter, and chose a seat in the back row. Freedom.

I’d chosen a documentary about filmmaking, which helped me align with a new and different creative process. I tapped in. As I watched, it became clear. The connection between writing and filmmaking, art and filmmaking, or between any creative endeavor is in the practice.

A spark launches a project, but the idea unfolds through its development. The process is intuitive, emotional, messy, mysterious, and deeply personal. It’s magical. When creating anything, there are sure to be challenges. Heartaches. There are unexpected discoveries. There are hits of passion and ah-ha moments. The process is an opportunity for growth and understanding life lessons.

My playdate was a success. Although I’d gone alone, I felt deeply connected to others. The moviemaking had mirrored my experiences in art, writing, and life. I felt validated and left the theater energized, ready to expand and carry on.

I encourage everyone to make a practice of a solo playdate. Spring is a perfect time for reflection and renewal. Time to oneself offers freedom and growth. It nourishes the soul.
