Editing Tips

All work requires editing. It’s hard to let go of words or art once we’ve created it but do it anyway.

1. Reread.

Set your work aside for a few days (or a few months if it’s a manuscript), and then return with fresh eyes. Print your work and read it aloud. You’ll hear the pace and rhythm of your words, catch simple mistakes, and perhaps realize what’s missing.

2. Proofread.

Use a program like grammerly.com to spell-check and review your grammar and sentence structure. By doing so, your writing will improve.

3. Solicit.

Ask someone, other than your mother, to read your work. They may catch mistakes, ask questions you had yet to consider, and offer suggestions that could improve your piece.
