Have you Written Bad Poetry?
And Why You Should
Love is the wind.
Love is the storm.
Love is the gentle breeze upon my cheek.
Love.
Bad? It is, after all, April Fool’s Day. Also, you won’t hurt my feelings--I wrote it when I was fifteen.
As a young teenager, I wrote reams of bad poetry. Back then, I’m sure I thought I was destined to become the next poet laureate.
Terrible or not, my poetry served a purpose. It gave me an outlet to express feelings, frustrations, and unrequited love. It fulfilled creative yearning, which, in turn, helped me understand myself a tiny bit better.
Writing poetry, good or bad, is therapeutic. Getting it from one’s head to the page can help calm nerves, relieve explosive feelings, and help people learn more about themselves. Identifying patterns and formulating language exercises a person’s brain. If it’s bad, who cares? It takes pressure off the process and makes room for better words.
Audre Lorde speaks to the connection poetry has with life: "Poetry is not only dream and vision; it is the skeleton architecture of our lives. It lays the foundations for a future of change, a bridge across our fears of what has never been before." That’s poetry right there.
Writing poetry can offer the following:
Self‑awareness: Encourages reflection and offers insights
Cognition: Strengthens vocabulary, thinking, and memory
Emotional processing: Puts feelings into words, clarifies emotions, reduces stress
Confidence: Builds Pride and Identity
Communication Skills: Improves ability to express ideas succinctly and vividly
Enjoyment!
I’m no Audre Lorde, but who is? Don’t get hung up on writing the perfect poem or comparing yourself to others.
Poetry is an expression of oneself.
Give it a try. Write a poem!
Quotes for the Soul!
“Poetry is not only dream and vision; it is the skeleton architecture of our lives. It lays the foundations for a future of change, a bridge across our fears of what has never been before.”
“Poetry is a life-cherishing force. For poems are not words, after all, but fires for the cold, ropes let down to the lost, something as necessary as bread in the pockets of the hungry.”
